Training: Maryport Salt Working

This set of training session is aimed at those who wish to learn new skills, or to further develop skills already gained, in archaeological techniques. The days will encompass the theory and method behind non-instrusive archaeological technique, further our understanding of the salt pan on the foreshore close to Maryport.

The training is two days and is free, with an optional third day too, but places must be booked.

On the Tuesday a classroom session, at the Wave Centre, in Maryport with help to introduce the theory and methods we will use, as well as the backgroud to the salt industry in Cumbria. The trainiong will start at 10am, so please arrive slightly beforehand.

The Wednesday training will be optional, again held at the Wave Centre, but will involve a step by step guide in how to use the interactive website and mobile app to record coastal and intertidal archaeology. This will be followed by a practical session held around the harbour and close to the Wave Centre to record the archaeology there.

The final day, the Thursday will be held on site at close to Bank End Farm and Maryport Golf Course. This is be using the skills learnt and put into practice to record the saltpans on the foreshore there.

Please be aware that the terrrain on the foreshore will not be flat, althougth access to the ebach is good, the terrain on the beach is rocky and uneven. It is advised that partipcipants weat suitable footwear and clothing, partipants should be prepare for all kinds of weather (sun and rain). They are also advised to bring a pack lunch. Parking is available at the Wave Centre and close by for Maryport Golf Course. Toilets and hand washing facilities are located at the Wave Centre for the first two days and to be confimed for the third.
