The Saxon Shore Way

19/11/2019  |  9 a.m.

Sandwich, Kent

Meet at The Beach Hut Cafe, 38 Strand Street, to walk at 9am.

Taking advantage of the low tide we will walk north along the Saxon Shore Way to update points on our map with the CITiZAN app and record anything new that we see. We'll pass close by the site of a Roman Amphitheatre and the site of Richborough Fort. Our ultimate goal is a building just to the east of Richborough Fort, associated with the First world War Richborough Port and re-used in the Second World War as a military prison. The walk is c. 4 miles total, there and back. Come along and ask us questions about the project, and see the methods we use to record and monitor intertidal archaeology!

This walk is an informal stroll on which you'll be joining CITiZAN archaeologists as they carry out one of their recconaissance visits across the East Kent Coast Discovery Programme area. As such we cannot take responsibility for access or path conditions along the route.

The map we've used to illustrate this walk is from Kent County Councils public rights of way web page - take a look around to see where else you can wander!

Email project officer/lead archaeologist Lara at lband@mola.org.uk if you've any questions
