How to explore the Interactive Coastal Map

How to add a new feature

New features are being exposed all the time in England’s intertidal and coastal regions, due to threats such as erosion, scour, or land slippage. These features can disappear as rapidly as they appear. New features can be easily added by registered CITiZAN surveyors so we all can record and monitor our fragile heritage.

How to edit an existing feature record

As you explore the features on the map, you may notice errors or omissions in the data. Any CITiZAN surveyor can edit a feature record which will not only keep our database accurate for other CITiZANs but as it is deposited with various heritage repositories across the country will also contribute to valuable research nationwide.

How to submit a feature update survey

There are over 80,000 known features on the CITiZAN interactive coastal map, a number which keeps growing as we add to the database. Due to the threat from natural and human influence, these features can change at a moment’s notice. Feature update surveys are undertaken to monitor change over time, to keep the database up to date and to recommend when urgent action should be taken to record our island heritage for future generations.

How to use the CITiZAN Smartphone App

Smart phones and tablets are powerful archaeological recording tools: with a camera and GPS facilities they are perfect for locating and recording new archaeological features. We already carry this tool around wherever we go so it is ideal for long-term monitoring of archaeological features at risk on England’s coastlines and estuaries.
