(Don't let it) Slip through the Net: fieldwalking for fish traps

06/11/2021  |  6 a.m.

Sandwich Bay, Kent

As  part of our ongoing archaeological survey of the  fish traps at Sandwich Bay we're going to 'fieldwalk' the foreshore to the south of the public carpark.

Our previous work has concentrated on the foreshore to the north of the car park, where we've found over 1100 stake belonging to stake nets in use into the 20th century and possibly dating back to the late 18th century.

We think there are the remains of at least one fish trap  to the south but have never  surveyed this area before so this work will assess how much further the remains spread to the south. There's the possibility we might not find very much at all – but this in itself will be extremely useful!

Join for Saturday and/or Sunday - sign up via Eventbrite.  It's an early start both days as this is the last ‘good’ low tide of the year (06.50 Saturday, 07.32 Sunday). But the payoff for early starts are the glorious sunrises! Depending on tidal conditions we’ll finish c 09.00 Saturday and 09.30 Sunday.

Places are limited  so if you sign up and then can't make it please cancel your ticket so your place can go to someone else.

How to get to Sandwich Bay: The Sandwich Bay estate charge a £7 toll for people arriving by car. CITiZAN can pay this for you if you keep your receipt. Unfortunately there's no public transport - the nearest station is Sandwich then a 50 minute walk/15 minute cycle (Google maps), we'll do our best however to match up lifts if you need one.

Facilities: there are public toilets in the car park, though these won't open until at least 09:00. The cafe bar at the Lodge at Princes opens at 10:00, if we're later than planned off the foreshore CITiZAN will treat you to a hot drink there.

Site conditions: The foreshore is level, generally firm underfoot but with small and shallow pools of water - you'll need wellies. It's exposed so please wear suitable clothing and bring sunblock, water/a flask and snacks if you want them.
