An Art Deco ventilation station and offices for the Mersey Road Tunnel. Located between the Port of Liverpool Building and the Strand, it was built 1931-34 to the designs of Sir Basil Mott and J. A. Brodie with Herbert J. Rowse as architect. Reconstruction work took place in 1951-2 by Rowse after war damage. The structure is dominated by the central ventilation shaft which takes the form of a stylised obelisk. Clad in Portland stone, the facade contains notable sculptures by Edmund C. Thompson, assisted by George T. Capstick. On the north and south fronts there are four reliefs depicting Civil Engineering, Construction, Architecture and decoration. On the west front there is a seven foot high figure with helmet and goggles representing Speed the Modern Mercury. Black basalt statues of Night and Day in niches allude to the never-closing tunnel whilst the east face contains a black marble memorial to the workers who in construction of the tunnel. The building is situated within the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City, World Heritage site.
