Salthouse Dock, opened 1753, was the second wet dock to be constructed at Liverpool. Designed by Thomas Steers, but probably finished by Henry Berry, this second dock was renamed Salthouse, receiving the name from John Blackburne's salt works at the eastern end of it. The dock played an important role in the export of salt with coal being brought from the Lancashire coalfield to refine rock salt at Blackburne's works, and manufactured salt was brought from Northwich via the Weaver and Mersey. In addition, the dock also became the depot for Irish ships transporting agricultural produce and for small French and Mediterranean vessels bringing back wine, brandy and fruit. Following the opening of Albert Dock in 1846/7 Salthouse was used mainly for loading vessels which had earlier unloaded in Albert. Masonry from the original 18th century dock is still visible at the south west corner but the majority of the masonry dates from improvements made in 1842 and 1853. One item of interest at Salthouse is the rebuilt gable of a transit shed (1855), the only surviving remnant of the many transit sheds built by Jesse Hartley for the temporary shelter of goods at the docks.
