A closed dock and warehouse complex built in 1843-7 by Jesse Hartley. The dock covers an area of 3.1 hectares and has 12.2 metre retaining walls constructed in Hartley's 'cyclopean' granite. The granite was quarried from the Dock Board's own quarry in Kirkmabreck, Scotland. There are two entrances, one on the east side, the other in the northwest corner. Grouped around the dock are five 18.3 metre high warehouse stacks, covering 92,900 square metres of floor space. The dock specialised in the Far East trade, and was successful, the southern warehouse stack was extended in 1853-55, however, by the 1870s the dock entrance was too small for the latest ocean going ships. The warehouses made rebuilding impractical, so by 1914 very few ships unloaded here. The warehouse were still used until the 1950s, storing bonded tobacco, wines and spirits. The dock was closed in 1972. The dock was named after Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria, who officially opened the dock in July 1845. The dock now houses shops, art galleries and museums.
