Canning Dock was created in 1829 by locking the 1737 Dry Dock, the tidal entrance to the Old Dock of 1710-16. The largest blocks of the north west quay wall, now part of George's Dock Passage, are belived to be of 18th century origin and are therfore the oldest visible walling on the dock estate. Repaired over the years in concrete, substantial parts are constructed from massive sandstone blocks. The dock tapers in plan from south to north with a narrow passage to Gerorge's Dock being at the extreme northern end. The dock was mainly a graving dock but also dealt with building materials, coastal trading and fishing. It was named after George Canning a politician. The dock was closed in 1972 and now forms part of the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
