Description

A shaped concrete block holding the remains of a wooden post which would formerly able to be hoisted to vertical.

According to information given during a tour of the lighthouse the post was the Coastguard storm warning post and would have been topped with a red cone which was raised aloft to top of post by Coastguard in order to warn mariners of impending storm conditions forecast.

Originally recorded as a rocket post in the data imported into the CITiZAN database. The Ordnance Survey map 6" to 1 mile map of 1887 (http://maps.nls.uk/) shows a post in the same place, labelled 'flagstaff'.

The concrete base of the post has now eroded fully out of the shingle ridge. Full recording, including photogrammetry would be a good idea.

Ask Alan the Shipwright to provide description of structure as he had identified repair section and types of wood involved (inc. unusual use of oak on such a feature) and explained in detail but succinctly its mode of operation.
