The proposed construction of a Tunnel under the River Severn was passed by an act of parliment with work commencing in 1810. The tunnel was to join the East and West banks of the River and allow goods to pass easily from either side without hinderance of the tides or having to go via Gloucester. The Tunnel had to have a number of ventialtion shafts to provide fresh air for those travelling through the tunnel, the remains of one of these shafts can bee seen eroding out of the banks of the River Severn. It is constructed of stone and in a poor condition, measuring about 2m in diameter.
